Looking for live theatre close to home? Art Beat, from the team at the Arts of the Pamlico’s (AOP) to learn about arts and cultural programming offered in Beaufort County is an opportunity to learn about arts activities in your back yard.
“It was only in theatre that I lived.” These words were quoted from Oscar Wilde, and the passion for great performance could not be any truer than at AOP.
The mixture of live performances and monthly broadcasts of Broadway on the Big Screen all year long is a direct response to patron’s appreciation of theatre on stage.
AOP offers our community adult community theatre, The AOP Players, and a vibrant children’s theatre, Bubblegum Theatre for Youth that together provide plays four – five times a year on stage.
The AOP Players also offer Murder Mystery events with actors in the mix.

In July, AOP’s Broadway Kids will present two exciting shows in July. First will be the classic Disney musical “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” on July 13, 2019 at both 2:30 and 7pm. Disney’s High School Musical Jr will have two performances on July 27, 2019 at 2 pm and 7:30 pm.
Tickets for these two shows will be $7/$5 with a cash discount each.
The Broadway Kids camps allow participating children the opportunity to take part in a professional scale production from auditions to final curtain call.
These camps are widely successful and fill quickly.
AOP has brought Broadway on the Big Screen to its theatre to provide broadcasts of professional, recorded shows on the Big Screen one to two times a month. This summer’s lineup includes“Bye Bye Birdie” July 14, 2019, and “Puffs” August 11,2019. Broadway on the Big Screen showings begin at 2pm on Sundays, unless it is a special showing on another day. Shows are free with a suggested donation of $5. Watch for familiar celebrity stars in each one!
Mark your August calendar for Bubblegum Theatre will hold their next auditions for “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” on August 24,2019 from 10-11am. Yet, there is even more exciting live theatre going on this summer.
In September, A Wicked Murder Wine Mystery Event is on the calendar. Auditions announced soon. And on September 28, don’t miss AOP’s Hands On Arts Festival featuring a production by Mary Ruth Coleman “Cats & Kittens”. Details on these auditions are forthcoming.
AOP’s historic Turnage Theatres also serves as a home to the ECU School of Music Opera Department for two performances a year (fall 2019 (Hansel & Gretel) & spring 2020 (The Fantastiks). In mid-October, the university’s theatre & dance program will perform The Turn of the Screw. And ECU’s Storybook Theatre performs here each spring too – watch for details on the February performance.
