Public Art Projects

AOP partners with artists and art groups to increase access to the arts with outdoor public art.

In 2009, the City installed artistically painted crab sculptures in downtown and across the City. You can find a bunch hanging out on the waterfront in Crab Park!

In 2016, AOP created two public art installations in partnership with the City of Washington and local artist Mary Alice Johnston to create a metal school of Merry Mullet and a field of metal tulips which hang in Harris Alley and on the back side of the Historic Turnage Theatre in downtown Washington.

In Belhaven, a mural was added to the side of the Attic Life shop’s building on Pamlico Street.

In 2017,  AOP teamed up with local artists and Sound Rivers and Potash Corp to turn river trash cleanup into art. The exhibit combined works from local artists with UNCW’s Plastic Ocean Art social art exhibit to raise awareness about the importance of our waterways.

In 2018, AOP supported a volunteer in creating a rainbow fence on the back of its Historic Turnage Theatre.

In 2019, AOP installed a mural of Starry, Starry Night by Karyn Drum on the back of the Historic Turnage Theatre. Additional art flats have been added.

In 2021, County funding supported the creation of a colorful butterfly where you can spread your wings for a selfie at Rachel K’s Bakery on Market Street in Washington.

Also in spring 2021, an outdoor mural project was funded and will result in up to three new murals in the City of Washington by October 2021.
