PLEIN AIR ON THE PAMLICO
JUNE 7 & 8, 2019 (check in begins June 6 at 1 PM) – Join us in beautiful Washington, NC for the first in a series of Plein Air events hosted by the Washington, NC Harbor District Arts Stops & the Arts of the Pamlico is the state-designated arts council for the region.

Overview: Casual & competing artists of all levels and ages are welcome to paint on the shores of the Pamlico River and in the Historic District of Washington, North Carolina during this first in a series of Plein Air on the Pamlico events.
The event will be a judged competition with prizes, a wet-paint sale and reception on Saturday, June 8 during Washington’s Annual Summer Fest. A month-long exhibit/sale at the Arts of the Pamlico will follow during the month of June 2019 with pickup on July 7th. Please note AOP will be closed July 2nd – 5th, reopening on Saturday, July 6th.
Painter Registration – The June 2019 event has a fee of $20 (cash/check) per artist. Add $2 for PayPal or credit card payment. Participating painters are asked to : (1) email Thad Aley at firstname.lastname@example.org about your intent to participate to help us plan and create goodie bags and (2) pay the fee online (below) or in person at the time of registration.
Lodging: There are several options to choose from in and near downtown Washington, NC. Hotels, Bed & Breakfast Inns in Washington & Bath, Air BnBs and more await your stay.
Please plan ahead and book early during this popular time of year in our river town with Summer Fest along the river adding to the great painting opportunities!

Boundary: The painting boundary encompasses many picturesque scenes including, but not limited to, the beautiful riverside, Historical homes, Grand Mansions, antique car show, NC Estuarium, gorgeous river views, majestic oaks, historical churches, colorful Summer Fest, the Havens Mill, a downtown Marina, the Historic Turnage Theatre, train station, antique caboose and more!
Rules: Fees are Check in and stamping of artist supplied canvases/substrates may begin as early as 1 – 6 PM on June 6 (Thursday) at the Arts of the Pamlico at the Historic Turnage Theatre, 150 West Main Street, Washington, NC. Check in will continue on June 7 from 9 AM – 6 PM and Saturday from 9 AM – Noon. Call (252) 946-2504 T-Th 1 – 6 PM, Fri 11 AM – 6 PM and Saturday 9 AM – Noon with questions. Pick up your goody bag and head out.
We will be roving the boundary area with our Golf Cart Volunteer to check in on the painters throughout the painting period.
Artists may submit up to THREE pieces for judging. All works must be done en plein air (outside), during the event times (nocturnal compositions accepted), within the painting boundaries as confirmed by the map (designated space to be provided at registration), and without assistance of photographs.
All canvases/substrates must be officially stamped at registration. Eligible submissions must be turned in by 3:00pm on June 8 (Saturday) at the Arts of the Pamlico. Artists must provide artist name, name of artwork and prices on the back of the canvas at the time of submission.
All media are accepted, except for photography. Artists must be present for the wet sale to sell their works of art and are encouraged to participate in the reception and judging process.
Canvas Restrictions: Canvases/Substrates may be no larger than 24” inches in any direction. Each artist may submit up to 3 completed works for judging.
Awards: 1st Place: $300 2nd Place: $200 3rd Place: $100 & a special prize chosen by the Washington -Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce (Chamber): Summer Fest Award (up to $750 if a work is selected) for the best work that captures Summer Fest splendor. The selected artwork and rights of use for the work will be retained by the Chamber. Awards will be given at 6 PM during the public reception which starts at 5 PM on Saturday, June 8 at the Historic Turnage Theatre.
Sales: Completed works may be listed for sale, at the artists’ request, in the wet-paint sale and during the gallery exhibit period.
The wet-paint sale will begin immediately after the judging, on Saturday afternoon, June 8, 2019 at 5 PM. Artists must price their own pieces.
Sales generated during the wet-paint sale will be the sole responsibility of the artists, for which 100% commission will be retained by the artist.
Judging and Critique: Judging will be completed by reception time. Dan Beck is the juror for the 2019 Plein Air on the Pamlico and will provide a critique during the reception.
Dan is a Contemporary Impressionist & a Gold Medal recipient of the 2017 Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition. In 2016, he received three national awards: Oil Painters of America National Exhibition, American Impressionist Society National Exhibition and Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition.
Reception: June 8 at 5 PM at the Historic Turnage Theatre. Light appetizers provided by the Washington Harbor District Art Stops & Shops. Music by Chuck Phillips.
Exhibit: Works will be displayed in the Lane Gallery in the Arts of the Pamlico’s Historic Turnage Theatre (area arts council) from June 8 through July 6th with pick up on July 7th (unless sold). The Arts of the Pamlico will retain a 30% commission. Half of the commission will be used to support future plein air paint outs hosted by the Washington Harbor District Art Stops.
