The Coronation of Poppea

ECU School of Music, Department of Opera will bring “The Coronation of Poppea” live to the Historic Turnage Theatre stage. Monteverdi’s opera is in three acts, all set in ancient Rome, in the year 65 A.D. The main characters include Nero, the Roman emperor; Poppea, his lover; Otho, Poppea’s fiancé; Drusilla, who is in love with Otho; and Octavia, Nero’s wife. Concessions will be available for purchase.

The instrumental ensemble will be comprised of professional musicians from across the United States and Canada who specialize in the playing of early, or “period,” instruments. The ensemble will be led by a well-known figure in the musical life of eastern North Carolina: Dr. John O’Brien, ECU Professor of Keyboard Studies and Early Music.
