Great Books: The Odyssey
with Brian Whipple and Mandy Monath
10:30-11:30 am | Wednesdays | May 6, 13 and 20 | Turnage Theater Gallery
Cost (includes all three sessions): $10 for AOP members/$15 non-members
What a ride! Whether you read it ages ago or never got around to it, join us as we jump into this weird and beautiful story of a man trying to find his way home. Read the book before the movie comes out this summer (Matt Damon as Odysseus)!
Important note: We will use Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey, which can be purchased at Pamlico Books.
Participants will learn, share, and discuss the epic in three sessions:
May 6: Chapters 1-8 A son seeks news of his hero dad. The hero washes up on the beach at the feet of a beautiful girl.
May 13: Chapters 9-16 Odysseus gets into all kinds of trouble involving one-eyed monsters, drug addicts, sailors turned into pigs, and a very unfortunate barbecue.
May 20: Chapters 17-24 Odysseus sneaks home for some serious payback.
Brian Whipple is a lifelong traveler who undertook his own odyssey to get to Washington.
Mandy Monath is a sometime classicist and head of Pamlico Writer’s Group.
