Pepito and the Trash Cans

27

Pepito and the Trash Cans

Join us for a joyful, heart-filled evening of music and storytelling with Pepito and the Trash Cans, a bilingual storytelling experience led by musical storyteller Luke Vandergriff.

This engaging performance weaves together live music, storytelling, and Spanish vocabulary to tell the inspiring story of Pepito, a young boy in Bolivia who dreams of making music—even when scarcity and hardship stand in his way. When traditional instruments are out of reach, Pepito and his siblings create their own instruments from bottles, cans, and other repurposed materials, turning obstacles into opportunities for creativity and hope.

Through Pepito’s journey, audiences of all ages will explore themes of:

  • Creativity and resilience

  • Environmental care and reuse

  • Socio-emotional learning

  • Cultural appreciation and diversity

Spanish vocabulary is naturally integrated throughout the story, making it accessible and engaging for both Spanish learners and first-time listeners. The performance culminates in an energetic, unforgettable song where music comes alive through recycled instruments—leaving audiences inspired, empowered, and reminded of their own self-worth.

About the Artist

Luke Vandergriff is a multi-disciplinary artist whose creative path began with a BA in Spanish from NC State University and led him to Bolivia, where he taught English and immersed himself in local culture. While volunteering at a children’s home, Luke rediscovered his passion for art—organizing workshops, painting murals, directing plays, and teaching music. Now based in Raleigh, NC, he continues his work as a musician and storyteller and has released multiple singles and an EP titled Pepito & The Trash Cans.

This performance is supported by Arts of the Pamlico with funding from the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Grant, the City of Washington, Beaufort County Administration, and Anonymous Trust.

✨ A perfect family-friendly event that blends music, language, and heart—don’t miss it!

Beaufort County Concert Association presents The Next Generation Leahy

Presented by Beaufort County Concert Association

Each and every time The Next Generation Leahy takes the stage, their singular goal is for audiences to walk away from the performance having been inspired by the players, energized by the music, and excited for their return. It is an ingrained, almost genetic drive to create music that has led the Leahy children to achieve so much.  Even at their young ages, they are accomplished multi-instrumentalists, whose live performances are filled with the high-energy, infectious Celtic-based music people associate with the Leahy heritage. Fiddle, cello, French accordion, singing, piano, and French-Canadian step-dancing all find a voice on stage.  “This family brings pure joy! With their amazing, natural talent and charming delivery, this up-tempo show will never be forgotten.”

Alternative Stage presents "Love, Sex, and the IRS"

An outrageous comedy is coming to the Turnage Theater March 5-7.

On those dates, Alternative Stage presents the 1970s-set bedroom farce, "Love, Sex, and the I.R.S." written by William Van Zandt and Jane Milmore.

The show has been described as a cross between "I Love Lucy" and "Some Like It Hot" ― and comic misunderstandings abound from curtain to curtain.

This raucous story of two roommates trying to cheat the IRS stars, in order of appearance, Savannah Wolf, Ethan Wolf, Tony Apple, Brandon Stephens, Russ Woolard, Paula Stephenson, Kelly Shanafelt, and Richard Young.

Tickets will be available through Arts of the Pamlico. Tickets cost $12 each for general admission or $10 each for seniors, students, and veterans.

Shows run at 7 p.m. March 5-6 and 3 p.m. March 7. Enjoy '70s music in the main gallery and purchase concessions from the local arts council before the curtain.

Don't miss the comedy hit of the season! If you need a good belly laugh, or lots of them, "Love, Sex, and the I.R.S." is for you.

We're presenting the show by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.

This project is being supported by the North Carolina Arts Council’s Grassroots Grants funding from the Arts of the Pamlico.
