Free painting workshop | All skill levels welcome
Explore the colors, stories, and traditions of Hispanic folk art while creating something uniquely your own. This free workshop brings art and conversation into the garden, offering a welcoming space to paint, connect, and find inspiration in nature.
We’ll begin with a short talk exploring traditional folk art and painting techniques from Mexico, Peru, Spain, El Salvador, and beyond. View examples, exchange stories, and spend time sketching your design freehand or using templates on a small canvas or canvas tote bag.
Then, settle into the garden to paint as we explore how the natural world inspires artists across cultures. No painting experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to create.
Take your canvas or tote bag home at the end of the session, ready to seal or continue painting another day.
Rain plan: The workshop will move to the Turnage Theatre’s backstage area.

Art in the Garden: Mexican Talavera Pavers
Art in the Garden: Mexican Talavera Pavers
Turn colorful pieces of Mexican Talavera tile into a handmade accent for your garden or yard. In this free, two-session workshop, you’ll create a 12 × 12-inch mosaic stepping stone while learning mosaic and tiling techniques, including how to mix and use grout and thinset/concrete.
You’ll plan your design and arrange your tiles during the first session, then return the following day to mix and apply grout to finish your creation.
Workshop schedule:

Can a wall tell a story? Can dance keep history alive? In The Living Canvas: Identity, Art, and Performance in the Hispanic World, Amy E. Wright takes audiences on a brief but colorful journey —from murals and marketplaces, to theater and storytelling— in streets and squares throughout the Americas. With memorable examples from Latin America and US Latino communities, she reveals how artists and performers down the years have transformed everyday spaces into living canvases for preserving memory, celebrating identities, and creating meaning.
Speaker Bio
Amy E. Wright is currently serving as Whichard Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at East Carolina University. Specializing in Mexican and Latin American culture, she is the author of Serial Mexico: Storytelling Across Media, from Nationhood to Now. Her work explores how stories move across media to shape history and community.

8th Annual Carnival of Darkness Film & Halloween Festival
The Halloween Festival and Carnival of Darkness Film Festival return October 16–17, bringing two days of frightening fun to downtown Washington during the Smoke on the Water barbecue festival!
The weekend will feature live music, international sci-fi and horror films, Creepy Karaoke, Halloween vendors, haunted-history presentations, costume contests, scare experiences, and the planned premiere of the locally produced horror film Suppertime III: The Final Course.
Friday, October 16: Horror Show VI
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for the Monster Dance Party, followed by Horror Show VI—a wild Halloween variety show hosted by Bloodcurdling Brandon and featuring talented actors, musicians, singers, and dancers from across North Carolina.
Scheduled performers and guests include Carolina Still, Monsters on Main, Queen Anne’s Revenge, the Haunted Pamlico Dancers, members of the Tar River Players, Charlotte’s Post Mortem Players, and more to be announced.
Throughout the evening, guests can expect roaming monsters, ghostly guides, puppetry, multimedia presentations, hidden actors, candy, and plenty of surprises. The evening will also include an adult costume contest sponsored by The Stubborn Mule and the planned premiere of Suppertime III: The Final Course, featuring live music and unexpected appearances from members of the cast.

Saturday’s festivities run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and feature sci-fi, horror, and suspense films selected from hundreds of submissions to the Carnival of Darkness competition. Vendors, concessions, raffles, Creepy Karaoke, haunted-history presentations, and roaming monsters will continue throughout the day.

11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. – Haunted History presentations in the Gallery; each presentation lasts approximately one hour

One-day passes are $10 per person and are available through the Carnival of Darkness page on FilmFreeway. All ticket proceeds support the nonprofit organization Alternative Stage/Haunted Pamlico.
Arts of the Pamlico will offer concessions in the entrance hall, including beer, wine, soft drinks, candy, and bottled water.

I Got Flowers is a moving theatrical presentation that examines how domestic violence can develop and escalate within a relationship.
Through spoken text, songs, and eight dramatic scenes, the play follows a woman from the beginning of a new romance through marriage and the emergence of troubling behavior. As the story unfolds, the meaning of the title I Got Flowers reveals the emotional cycle at the heart of the production.
After each scene, a narrator guides the audience through what happened and why, offering insight into common warning signs, patterns of control, and the progression of domestic violence.
Presented by Ruth's House and written and directed by Dr. Nancy Buroughs, this special community event is proudly sponsored by Arts of the Pamlico, the City of Washington Human Relations Council and Noon Rotary, whose support helps bring important conversations like this to our community through the performing arts.
There is no charge to attend. Donations will be requested to benefit Ruth's House and its ongoing work supporting survivors of domestic violence.

When the lights go down, the theatre comes alive—and some of its performers have been waiting a very long time for an audience.
Join Alternative Stage for an immersive haunted tour through the Historic Turnage Theatre and its mysterious upstairs Vaudeville Theatre. Along the way, you’ll encounter the theatre’s undead residents, who are eager to step back into the spotlight, share their stories, and deliver plenty of chilling surprises.
Part theatre tour, part live performance, and part haunted attraction, this one-of-a-kind experience also includes a screening of an original film by Alternative Stage and Haunted Pamlico.

Join Arts of the Pamlico for an evening celebrating art, artists, and the creative spirit of our community at the Reception & Awards Ceremony for the 62nd Annual Alice Hubbard Stallings Fine Arts Show.

Guests are invited to experience this year’s juried exhibition, meet participating artists, and gather with fellow art lovers as we recognize outstanding work from across the region. The evening will include the presentation of awards and honors, including Best of Show, Young Artists Award, Best of 2D, Best of 3D, Best of Acrylics, Best of Mixed Media, and several special memorial and sponsored awards. More than $6,000 in cash prizes will be awarded.
This year’s exhibition is juried by Will Barclift, Executive Director of Tryon Arts & Crafts School, whose background spans galleries, education, arts administration, and a multidisciplinary artistic practice.
Whether you are an artist, collector, longtime supporter, or simply curious to discover new work, the reception is an opportunity to come together, celebrate creativity, and recognize the artists who make our region’s cultural community so vibrant.
Come raise a glass to the artists, discover this year’s award-winning works, and help us open the 62nd annual exhibition together.
The Fine Arts Show will remain on exhibition November 6, 2026 through the end of January 2027.

About the Presenter
We are thrilled to welcome George Mewborn from the Greene County Museum. A retired teacher and an active volunteer in Snow Hill, George’s passion for local and regional history began in childhood. What You Will Learn
This intensive workshop is designed to bridge the gap between the written script and a living, breathing performance. We will focus on stepping out of the head and into the reality of the scene. Over the course of two days, actors will actively drill and master physical truth, deep subtext, and conversational reality, stripping away artificial habits so the final performance loses the “acting” and sounds completely natural and grounded.

Buddy brings four decades of major film, television, and live theatre experience to this intensive. As a full-time performance coach, operating under Leprachaun Coaching, Inc, his goal is to provide actors with practical, battle-tested tools. His unwavering coaching philosophy focuses entirely on directing the behavior rather than the person, creating a safe, high-energy environment where actors can take bold risks and leave with their pride and confidence intact.

Vrolet Sun Live at the Turnage Theatre

What began as a last-minute effort to save a gig has grown into one of Eastern North Carolina’s exciting local collaborations. Vrolet Sun was formed in the fall of 2025 when musician Brian Burke brought together a group of talented friends to fill an unexpected opening. The chemistry was immediate, and the band has been performing together ever since.
Vrolet Sun brings together five experienced musicians whose influences span classic rock, blues, jazz, folk, and Americana:

Chuck Phillips — vocals, drums, and mouth harp
Pamela Mayes — vocals
J.B. Mayes — vocals and guitar
Taylor Lee — vocals and bass guitar

Hemingway’s Portrayal of the Burdens of War
Ernest Hemingway wrote three “Nick Adams” stories that can be understood as the main character’s struggle to endure the effects of “blast trauma” or post-traumatic stress disorder. Join Dr. Pisano to explore these three great stories and gain insight into Hemingway’s powerful portrayal of the burdens of war.

Join us for another exciting Beyond the Blue: Adventures in Astronomy program presented by A Time for Science and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences!
This month's theme is Black Holes. Young explorers will discover the fascinating life cycle of a star—from its brilliant beginning to the incredible events that can happen at the end of its life. Through engaging, age-appropriate activities, children will learn about one of the universe's most mysterious phenomena.

Learning Collective: Herman Melville’s lost manuscript, Daniel Orme, with Dr. Francis Pisano

Dr. Pisano will present this very short story by Herman Melville, discovered as a manuscript after the author’s death. It was the last thing Melville ever wrote and holds fascinating clues to his life and the seaside places he held dear. Even if you haven’t read that thick book about the whale, you will enjoy this glimpse into the mind of a great American novelist.
