Pepito and the Trash Cans
Join us for a joyful, heart-filled evening of music and storytelling with Pepito and the Trash Cans, a bilingual storytelling experience led by musical storyteller Luke Vandergriff.
This engaging performance weaves together live music, storytelling, and Spanish vocabulary to tell the inspiring story of Pepito, a young boy in Bolivia who dreams of making music—even when scarcity and hardship stand in his way. When traditional instruments are out of reach, Pepito and his siblings create their own instruments from bottles, cans, and other repurposed materials, turning obstacles into opportunities for creativity and hope.
Through Pepito’s journey, audiences of all ages will explore themes of:
Creativity and resilience
Environmental care and reuse
Socio-emotional learning
Cultural appreciation and diversity
Spanish vocabulary is naturally integrated throughout the story, making it accessible and engaging for both Spanish learners and first-time listeners. The performance culminates in an energetic, unforgettable song where music comes alive through recycled instruments—leaving audiences inspired, empowered, and reminded of their own self-worth.
About the Artist
Luke Vandergriff is a multi-disciplinary artist whose creative path began with a BA in Spanish from NC State University and led him to Bolivia, where he taught English and immersed himself in local culture. While volunteering at a children’s home, Luke rediscovered his passion for art—organizing workshops, painting murals, directing plays, and teaching music. Now based in Raleigh, NC, he continues his work as a musician and storyteller and has released multiple singles and an EP titled Pepito & The Trash Cans.
This performance is supported by Arts of the Pamlico with funding from the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Grant, the City of Washington, Beaufort County Administration, and Anonymous Trust.
✨ A perfect family-friendly event that blends music, language, and heart—don’t miss it!
