Hemingway’s Portrayal of the Burdens of War

Ernest Hemingway wrote three “Nick Adams” stories that can be understood as the main character’s struggle to endure the effects of “blast trauma” or post-traumatic stress disorder. Join Dr. Pisano to explore these three great stories and gain insight into Hemingway’s powerful portrayal of the burdens of war.

The Featured Stories:

  • Now I Lay Me

  • A Way You’ll Never Be

  • Big Two-Hearted River

All three pieces can be found in the collection entitled “The Nick Adams Stories.” The book is widely available and can be ordered locally from our friends at Pamlico Books (https://pamlicobooks.com/).

About the Presenter: Dr. Pisano earned his PhD at Penn State before working at West Virginia State College and the Columbia Area Career Center in Missouri, where he served as a literacy specialist. He is also an accomplished crafter of dioramas, on which he paints miniature murals
