The Living Canvas
A Space to Create
Community Art Space Beautifies Backside of Historic Theatre
Arts of the Pamlico (AOP) began its partnership with the Pamlico Rose Institute (PRI) and the PRI Health Corps in late 2025 to transform the Historic Turnage Theatre’s backside into a vibrant sanctuary for learning and creativity. The space. The Living Canvas, is seen by hundreds of people who shop and eat downtown, utilize County and City facilities and businesses and more.
Over a 8-month period between November 2025 and June 2026 the beginnings of a public art garden was designed and installed with support from AmeriCorps and PRI project and private donations to AOP. The partnership will continue into 2027 as the every expanding community group of gardeners, artists, youth, and community supporters work together to create a vibrant, welcoming space that promotes creativity, healthy living and community.
About the Garden
The garden is comprised of native NC plants, an outdoor classroom, a gallery for local art exhibits, and the Alley Bistro. Look for events in the Garden under the Events tab above. AOP team members and the community watering bridgade keep the plants nourished with water provided by theatre neighbor, Stubborn Mule’s Joan & Roger Meyland.
Led by Passion
Our initiative was spearheaded and co-designed by AmeriCorps staff member Lisa Hodges, a Master Gardner and Artist and AOP’s Executive Director, Debra Torrence. Installation has been supported by Paul Harding, Anthoney Wooden & Williams Figueroa.
What’s Next
In August, Lisa Hodges will continue to consult as a Master Gardener and volunteer. Lisa will also offer art programs in the garden as Grace Bowers joins the AOP & AmeriCorps teams. Grace will continue to maintain and develop the garden with the community and artists and utilize the space for workshops supported by Anonymous Trust.
This summer, AOP will utilize awarded funding from AARP’s Community Challenge grant program. This funding will support the development of ADA access to the theatre and garden with furniture, shade structure and surfacing. Grant funds will also support the development of creativity spaces in front of the theatre with furniture and shade structures, complimented by AOP’s existing Play It Piano and space to be adorned by native plants.
